Heidelberg, Germany — October 16, 2014 – Heidelberg Engineering GmbH announces an ophthalmic PACS platform at AAO Meeting in Chicago.

“This new picture archiving and communication system (PACS) is a big step forward for our customers” said Dr. Kester Nahen, Managing Director of Heidelberg Engineering. “The HEYEX PACS software platform will not only support Heidelberg Engineering devices but also integrate imaging devices of other manufacturers and diagnostic data into a centralized database. This will enable our customers to access, review and compare all their clinical images in one central application. HEYEX PACS allows us to offer a comprehensive image management and device integration platform to eye care professionals, ranging from small practices to large hospitals. Looking at the demands of our customers it is very clear that PACS technology is of critical importance to deal with the increasing complexity of diagnostic imaging. The HEYEX PACS will be an integral part of our standard imaging device offer.”

HEYEX PACS evolves from the known HEYEX (Heidelberg Eye Explorer) image management, networking and device control software incorporated in every Heidelberg Engineering instrument.

The strategic decision to expand its offerings of data workflow solutions resulted in the acquisition of the company Medical Communication based in Bruchsal, Germany, in late 2013. The company presents 20 years of experience in data management and communication workflow with major data volumes, mainly in the field of radiology.

Over the last years the use of diagnostic imaging in ophthalmology has grown considerably. Eye care professionals find themselves in a situation where they have to deal with an increasing amount of diagnostic data and information complexity to properly diagnose and manage patients. HEXEX PACS has been developed to address these challenges. The platform offers a new level of security, reliability, speed, integration and expandability. The technologies and standards used are established and proven, yet adjustable and scalable to individual needs, ranging from small practices to large, multi-location clinic organizations.

“The concept of Heidelberg Engineering has always been to offer system platforms that customers can expand and upgrade with modules they need, that are flexible and even grow with the organization” Dr. Nahen explained. “Our strategy to offer sustainable solutions has proven to be highly relevant to customers and it makes sense to follow this pathway with HEYEX PACS. Whether you want to integrate into major IT-infrastructures, interface with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, review imaging data from mobile devices or just centralize all your data; the possibilities will be virtually unlimited. Our clear goal is to enhance the performance and workflow efficiency of eye care professionals. I’m very confident that this will translate into better patient care and practice growth.”

The HEYEX PACS will initially be launched in Europe. Not all modules are currently available for sale in the United States.
